I have been a teacher for about 30 years in a public school system.  Most of my time has been spent on a Middle School level.  I have not had to press charges as a teacher, but I have pressed charges on behalf of my son in an assault incident.  While it may seem harsh, pressing charges is sometimes the only way to get help for the aggressive student.  Also, kids need to understand that when their behavior is unlawful, it won't be tolerated.  If it's not acceptable on the street then it shouldn't be tolerated in school.  Everyone has the right to an education.  Too often the whole class loses out because I have to deal with a child with a behavior problem - too much instructional time is wasted!
