Q: Correcting unwanted behavior

What is the best way to discipline a child with adhd? My son was just diagnosed with adhd and I don't know what is the best way to correct his unwanted behavior? When the other children make him angry he deals with it by hitting or trying to hurt someone. Then usually a tantrum starts. When he doesn't get his way the tantrums are horrible. Is this normal? We haven't been able to find a medication that works for us yet. we are still trying. Does anyone have any suggestions?

There are many techniques that can be tried for children with ADHD.  Do not allow him to use his condition as an excuse.  You do not say how old your son is so it is difficult to give you specifics.   I raised 4 kids with ADD/ADHD and my husband has ADD.  It is entirely something you can learn how to do.  We have a phenomenal psychologist who has worked with all of our children and my husband and I.  My suggestion is to find a therapist who works with families where ADHD is involved.  We all have different personalities as I am sure your family does.  Your therapist can observe your interactions with your son/visa versa and provide helpful feedback in raising your ADHD diagnosed child.  My advice is to treat him as normally as possible.  What he does not need is "special" treatment because of his diagnosis.  Your therapist, providing you find one that specializes in working with kids with ADHD will be your best resource.
