Q: Adults with ADHD- Should we have an EKG?

In light of the recent communication regarding testing children with an EKG before admistering medication is there a reccomendation for adults to get one as well?

I don't believe there is a recommendation at this point for adults to have an EKG done before beginning medication, but is is a cautious and good idea to have this completed first.

Hi Rick,

 

Because one of the common but serious side effects of almost all medications prescribed to treat ADHD is chest pain and rapid heartbeat, doctors usually want to have EKG's done to rule out any issues with the heart prior to starting the medication for the ADHD.
