Q: My son has ADHD. I have a hard time getting him to listen.

My son has ADHD. I have a hard time getting him to listen. When I tell him not to do something, he says he understands. But does it anyway. Why does he do this and what can I do? An example is: Not watching TV or eating without permission. Does this have anything to do with his brain not developing correctly?

Thank you for your question and welcome to ADHDCentral.com.

Although it would be impossible for me to say exactly why your son is not listening, this is certainly a common complaint of many parents of children with ADHD.

It could be that your son is not listening because he is distracted while you are talking and is not paying attention or it could be a product of short term memory deficit, where he simply does not remember once something else has taken his attention.

To help, you might want to make sure you make eye contact with him while speaking to him and have him repeat back what you have said. In addition, you can set up a behavioral chart to help him improve.

Hi there

Eileen has already given you some excellent resources but I was thinking that maybe you want to add another sensory modality for him to receive the information you wish him to get.  Some kids do well with a visual schedule...where you can show him when he can watch tv and when meals are.

Another strategy is to ask him to repeat back what he has heard you say.

Hope this helps some and thank you for your question.
