Q: is it possible to have trichotillomania related to adhd?

I'm so confused. I basically was told when i was 16 i have ocd. I also have impuslive control disorders manly, like trichotillomania and compuslive eating. i get depressed from these symptoms but i can't get them under control. I think i'm being obsessive about food. I now, looking into it, really think i have adult adhd. I have all this nervous energy, and am ALWYAS fidgety, often forgetful. I always had a hard time concentrating in class, to this day, and never do and just try and study on my own. Is it possible my trich (really dermatillomania but trich is more known) and compulsive eating, which have gotten worse despite all my efforts to heal, are symptoms of adhd and not ocd? could i have both? i heard wellbutrin is both an anti-depressent and helps adhd? help! thank you

Hi Reese:

It's possible to have OCD, ADHD, and mood disorders at the same time.  A person with trich often has other OCD types of behaviors which may have started by a need to be in control. People with ADD/HD often have anxiety, depression and types of OCD behaviors because of the ADD/HD.

Doctors have been using Strattera, which is an antidepressant for ADD/HD, with mixed results. Typically, they treat each problem with separate meds; that is, for the OCD, they often use very high doses of Zoloft or Prozac, Ritalin for ADD/HD, and perhaps an anti-anxiety medication for anxious patients.

What does your psychiatrist recommend? Does he/she suggest a collection of medications, or just one?

Talk with him about using more than one med; if you don't get the answers you want, get a second opinion.

Best of luck,
