Q: ADHD grandson eats same foods every night for dinner...

My grandson was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at age 2 1/2 and adhd at age 6 and is on meds. He won't eat what most kids eat...such as spaghetti, hot dogs, hamburgers and most vegetables. His dinner has been the same for years and his pediatrician said as long as he is growing, gaining weight and healthy it's not a problem. He won't even TRY other foods as he chokes or gags on them and has since he was a toddler. Is this part of his sensory/taste problems due to autism? He's doing well in regular school (2nd grade) but the teacher is aware of his special needs and teaches him appropriately to make sure he grasps things that may be difficult for him. BTW, he will be receiving First Holy Communion next month and the teacher is concerned about him taking the host in his mouth and gave his mom a few unblessed ones to practice with.

Thank you for your question and welcome to ADHDCentral.com.

The lack of a variety of foods could possibly be an offset of autism. However, many children prefer to eat only a small variety of foods when younger. As they grow, so may their taste in food and their willingness to try new things.

It sounds as if your grandson is surrounded by caring and loving people. I am sure that will help him a great deal in school and in life.

I noticed the same behavior in my son until he was around 7 years old when his tastes started to mature. Sometimes introducing new foods in a fun way can work!
