Q: I make very little money, and I desperately need ADHD medication. Do manufacturers really help people with medication costs? Any suggestions? Thanks, Meggie (member)

I have used the programs offered through the pharmaceutical companies to get medication for my son. Those medications that are a controlled substance, such as Adderall or Ritalin, must be sent to a doctor's office for you to pick up or you will get a voucher to pick the medication up at a pharmacy. Other medications, such as antidepressants, were sent directly to him.

Each program has different requirements. The first step is to get a prescription from a doctor. If you can't afford a doctor, you can visit a free clinic. Once you have that, you can contact the manufacturer of the medication to find out what programs are available.

Let me know how it works out.
