Hi Ann:

In one sense, your doctor is correct that it is harder to be diagnosed with ADHD as an adult. Life often can cause problems with focus and attention, but this is not necessarily due to attention deficit disorders. We consider the attention disorders to be starting in childhood and thus should be diagnosed then.

However, the problem with this reasoning is that they didn't even consider this as a problem in the 50's and 60's, it was just the way that people were. There was no "attention deficit" diagnoses until recently.

However, you can still be diagnosed with ADD/HD by a Psychologist who is able to do the testing, but understand that stress, fatigue, anxiety and depression will cause lack of focus and inability to remember. Just know that this kind of testing is not covered by insurance and is typically very expensive.

If you are diagnosed with ADD/HD, then there are medications you could try, or Neurofeedback, a non-medication route that is very successful in reducing the symptoms. You can find a psychologist at Psychology Today. You can read more about Neurofeedback here.

Best of luck,

Dr. Diana Walcutt
