How important is a stable home environment.

Mike
08/05/09

I currently have shared custody of my three children. One of them has ADHD.

My childrens Mom is bi polar and depressive.

Home life for the children is extreamly different while at my home and at the kids moms home.

I want to stabalise the home life by keeping the kids at one home. Mother indicates due to her being bi polar she cant managed the kids full time. She also says it doesnt matter that the home life changes.

I need help with this. What would the experts say?

Thank you for your question and welcome to ADHDCentral.coml. Poor parenting or a chaotic home life do not cause ADHD. There has been some research that a disorganized or chaotic home life can worsen symptoms of ADHD, only because the symptoms are not being properly managed by the adult in the household. There is no clear correlation, however. It would be impossible for me to say whether staying in your ex-wife's home would be harmful to your children. That would need to be decided by professionals in your area that have access and a relationship with your children.
