How do you know when my child needs his bi-polar checked again??

Topics:bi-polar in children

My son went into the local psychiatric hospital when he was in 5th grade for what they called a bi-polar break through.  He was being treated for symptoms of depression and ADHD at the time he went in.  They took him down off all his meds and then determined that he was bi-polar with ADHD.  They put him on Abilify and seraquel and concerta.

He has just finished the 8th grade barely and has really become easily agitated again.  He has gained enough weight due to the effects of the meds that he is now overweight and gets teased about that.  he struggles contantly with school and organizational skills but when I tried to get the school to set up an IEP for him to get help with a couple of subjects and organization, they said he didn't show a need.

I just wondered whether we should take him back to be re-evaluated.  Is there something other than bi-polar that could be causing symptoms of irritability, mood swings, and lack of concentration and organizational skills.  Is the medicine he takes for bi-polar that makes him gain weight more important than the self-esteem he lost when he became fat.  I have seen how cruel the kids can be to him and others that are bigger and his self-confidence was medium to fair before the weight gain.  I just don't know what to do for him and it is very frustrating to see him struggle everyday with the weight and school.  Do you have any suggestions?  Thanks.

Hello Sunni,

It's unfortunate that kids in elementary and junior high can be so cruel. I have a neice going through similar problems. The best thing to do is to consult your doctor. While online resources are great for getting information that will help you ask all the right questions, they can not take the place of your doctor's sound medical advice.

Until then,Here you can read an article that gives you the basics of ADHD medications. Here is a link to ADHD and how it affects the child and what can be expected.

This link will tell you about treatments available.

Good luck. Please stay in touch and let us know how you and your son are doing!
