Thursday, March 19, 2009 Charlotte asks

Q: Is is possible to have a processing disorder instead of ADHD?

My son has been diagnosed as ADHD. He is only on Zoloft 12.5 mg twice a day. All of the ADHD medicine made him wacky. It was as though he were Bipolar when on any of it. He can go for days on this medicine and be able to test well and remember everything. If he misses 1 dose, you are not able to study with him because he CAN NOT CONCENTRATE. Also, there is nothing to retreive in his brain. It is as though he has never seen or heard of the information he already knows. It is as though he has a major processing disorder when he is not on the Zoloft. When you get him back on the Zoloft, he is a new child again and can remember everything.

Is this possible or am I imagining this?

Thank you for your question and welcome to ADHDCentral.com.

I am a big believer in parents knowing their children better than anyone else so I would not think you are making this up but can see a difference.

As far as processing disorders, these can occur as a co-existing condition with ADHD or on their own. It would be impossible for me to say whether your son may have a processing disorder. I would suggest talking with your doctor about what you have been observing and trying to find someone in your area that can evaluate and diagnose processing disorders.
