Thank you for your question and welcome to ADHDCentral.com.
Think of HealthCentral as similar to an magazine, just online and without a print version. Just as the articles in many magazines are submitted by freelance writers, the articles on HealthCentral are also written by freelance writers. One difference is that some magazines have staff writers and some use a combination of staff and freelance writers, HealthCentral uses mainly freelance writers, like myself. Another difference is that the freelance writers at HealthCentral are contracted to write on a regular basis, such as once a week, instead of submitting an article more irregularly, like magazines.
As far as the ads go, companies do pay HealthCentral to run the ads on the site. Again, this is similar to the advertisements you see in magazines, newspapers and other print and online publications. The companies who submit ads, however, have no editorial input and do not influence what topics are written about or how information is presented.
I hope this answers your question.
