Q: Is 100mg a day of ritalin a safe dose.My consultant has done this? Seems a bit high.
dear tony - im a single mom of an 11 year old son who has adhd w/odd (oppositional defiant disorder) as well as some bipolar tendency's & i myself have a mild add - im not in the medical field by any means & in my opinion i would say that the dosage should go on the height, weight and the tolerence of the person who's taking the ritalin and whether or not they are a younger or older adult - my son who just turned eleven this past december of '09 takes 3 20mg tablets of ritalin a day (he also takes clonidine & strattera for his adhd & zyprexa when he needs it for his bipolar tendency's) - my friends son who will turn 12 mid june of this year 2010 takes focalin which is double strength ritalin takes 2 20mg tabs of focalin and 1 10mg reg ritalin a day which comes out to be the equivalant of 90mg a day - so consider all of this it may or may not be such a high dose depending on the severity of adhd the person has - hope this gave you some insight or a little bit of help w/your question - take care tony & have a good day - heather and cathy (my friends name is cathy)
I am actually perscribed more than that per day; 120 mg. I don't usually take that much but there are some days that I find it necessary to do so. Ritalin calms me down, I can actually go to sleep on it believe it or not. I take mine in several doses through out the day - not extended release, so for me it is easier to get the medication I need when I actually need it. Caffine has the same effect on me as well, although it can make me irritable (which ritalin does not).
Best of luck to you.
