Tuesday, July 22, 2008 mom in tears....... asks

Q: how to find right meds once and for all.

My son ha had ADHD ond ODD since he was 6. We spend more time in the Doctors office (same one) trying to find the right meds, than actually focusing on helping the entire situation. Life is hell for my son, now 11, b/c he knows something is wrong, is really contience of his ADHD, but just cant control it by himself. All of these meds never seem to help him.

He is starting middle school and is in an LD class; he feels so bad about himself and constantly focusing on how others view him and how he is treated (for behaviors he can't seem to control). Please help me. We have been going this same route for 6 years now and it is getting worse. Any advice would be so greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mom in tears......

Hi Mom in tears,

I really feel for you. I know the frustration you and your son are experiencing.

There are two issues at stake. One is finding the right meds; the other is helping your son and his self confidence and self esteem.

To address the first-

It might be time to get a second opinion. I'm not sure what kind of physician you're working with, but often times, pediatricians or general practitioners simply aren't as well versed on ADHD meds as are child psychiatrists. You might want to consider consulting with one.

It can take quite a long time to find the right medication and dosage. It often takes lots of tweaking to get it right. And it IS frustrating! So...I would search for a doctor who sees a LOT of kids with ADD and get another opinion.

To help your son with his self esteem, please consider counseling with someone who works a lot with children who have ADHD. It can do a world of good when the child feels understood and gets guidance from a professional.

You can find names of ADD professionals at:

www.CHADD.org

Good luck and don't give up!

Terry

Have you tried a more natural approach such as changing his diet, limiting sugar, vitamins, or does he have allergies to anything?
