Q: BEST MEDICINE

My grandson is ADHD and has been on Aderall, Focalin and Vyannesse.  The Aderall stopped working before he maxed out the dosage, focalin worked but he developed extreme mood swings (throwing fits when told no, hitting himself, hitting doors and walls, throwing his desk at school, etc) so I changed to Vyannese; and at first it was ok - but now the outbursts are back.  Any suggestions on other medicines?

Thank you for your question and welcome to ADHDCentral.com.

Since I am not a medical professional, I would not be able to advise you on medications.

I can tell you everyone reacts differently to medications and sometimes it is a matter of trial and error to find the right medication and the right dosage.

I assume, since you have tried several medications, that you have discussed this with your grandson's doctor. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to find the medication right for your grandson other than trying a different medication when one does not seem to work.

You really need a referral to a Neuropsychologist and a pschopharmacologist, to help you thru this!  Good luck!

Gayle, is your grandson seeing a psychiatrist?  Has the teacher been able to give you any insight about class activities or incidents that have led to this behavior.  The other advice on this page, I think, is right -- you need to see a professional about medication options.  But the fact that your grandson has had similar behavioral outbursts on different medications and different dosage levels may indicate that he is facing some other challenges or symptoms that ADHD meds alone are not addressing.  One thing to consider is your grandson's age and whether or not he might be entering puberty or going through some changes not unlike puberty.  Boys who are undergoing rapid hormonal changes due to growth spurts or puberty sometimes have behavioral outbursts that may be impacted for better or for worse by certain medications.
