Heather is a recovering heroin addict now involved for nearly 3 years in methedone treatment. She is heroin clean but takes zantax she buys from the street so she can somehow find a way to sleep for a few hours at night. Her daughter, Angelina was born with a methedone addiction. Now 2yrs/11 mos., the daughter demands 100% focused attention from her mother (there is no one else to help with child care) 7am-11pm. Angelina throws tantrums, destroys things, is constantly running, bouncing never sitting, hits mom, will hardly eat and sleeps rarely. Please understand the mother and child are homeless, without financial support except what I can give. She has tried to apply for aid, crying out for direction, pleading for help with the child she loves and hopes will have a better furture within a system that seems designed to keep people like her on the street, with hardly even a cold objective interest in her situation. She is so exhausted and in such despair she can hardly fill the reams of paper work required. There are days when she cannot even think yet somehow she gets up, takes her child to the meth. clinic in a drug infested area of the city. I don't even know where to start identifying questions let alone answers for this situation. I know this beyond questions of medicine but medical help us desperately needed to provide alterante to the dibilitating methedone treatment and the childs out of control behavior. 1. Where can I research ongoing effects of methedone addiction on this child? 2. Is there research on a pathway of effective treatment? 3. Is there research that ritalin could help at least to get Heather some peace even for an hour so she can sleep or try to call agencies for help? 4. Are there organizations that can compassionately advocate for the homeless?
