Q: As the mother of a 22 year old son, I want to know how to go about having him evaluated for ADD?

As a Special Education teacher, I know that my son exhibits many of the characteristics found in people with ADD.  Although I have talked to him many times about this, we have never formally followed through with testing.  Because of his age, will he have to undergo a full scale psychological test to be identified as having ADD? I would like for him to have an option of taking meds if necessary.

Usually, full psychological testing is not necessary.  As the previous answer said, it can be a fairly simple process if the examiner is familiar with ADHD.  There are adult screening questionnaires which are helpful.  I also like to look at the person's old report cards if they are available or can be obtained from the school district.  The report cards from the early grades have comments from teachers who were with the child all day and often show inattentiveness, "poor effort" or poor work habits at an early age.

Good luck,

Cathi

I live in Arkansas and I went to Delta Counceling. First I talk to a Psychologist and then was put with the doctor. He went through a series of questions and one simple sheet of questions to answer. Thats all there was to it. I hop[e this helps.
