Psychiatric Nurse
Psychiatric Nurses have received a degree in nursing and often have continued their education to receive a Master’s Degree. Many have received specialized training in mental and emotional disorders. Psychiatric Nurses work in a variety of locations, including psychiatric hospitals, mental illness treatment centers, as patient advocates, as counselors and as crisis intervention specialists.
Nurse Practitioners
A Nurse Practitioner has received their degree in nursing and has received additional training and education in diagnosing and treating illnesses. Some specialize in mental health. Nurse practitioners can prescribe medication in many states, provide treatment and referrals and perform physical examinations. They are different from medical doctors as the emphasis is in providing information and education for a patient’s overall wellness.
Social Workers
Social Workers are licensed and they are able to diagnose and treat individuals. They can also provide therapy and counseling. Social workers can work as patient advocates, helping to locate and secure community services for patients with mental illness. They also can provide emotional support for the patients and their families.
