A researcher who specializes in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder has new recommendations for diagnosing and treating ADHD patients with a risk of substance abuse. Scott H. Kollins, Ph.D., of Duke University, suggested that doctors routinely collect a detailed substance abuse history of ADHD patients, particularly in high-risk cases. He recommended that ADHD patients with a moderate risk of alcohol or marijuana abuse use Strattera or Wellbutrin instead of stimulants.
