Researchers are finding that sleep apnea in children may affect parts of the brain involved in learning and attention. Pediatricians are supposed to screen all children for the nighttime breathing disorder, but many screen only obese children. Experts think some children are being inappropriately diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and medicated, while the real problem--sleep apnea--goes untreated.
