Study: Free drug samples risk kids' health
Free drug samples from pediatricians are not helping low-income children get access to medication and may be putting children's health at risk in general, according to a new study. Strattera, Adderall, Elidel, and Advair were four of the 15 drugs most often given out as free samples in 2004. All four received "black box" safety warnings between 2004 and 2007. One researcher said that free samples don't have childproof caps, instructions on what to do in case of an overdose, or information about kids' doses. The study also found that poor children were no more likely to receive the samples than kids in the highest income group, in part because the poor are less likely to see doctors.
