Free drug samples may put kids at risk

New research published in the journal Pediatrics suggests that giving free drug samples to pediatric patients may be unsafe. Researchers examined data on 10,295 children and adolescents from a 2004 survey and found that one in 20 children had received free drug samples during that year. Researchers were concerned by this because four of the 15 most frequently distributed samples were identified as having significant new safety concerns. Others, such as Strattera and Adderall, were classified as controlled substances with a risk for abuse. Investigators also found that few free samples actually go to uninsured children who most need them.  Read full story >
