14 off-label meds that need more study: experts

A new study published in the journal Pharmacotherapy has found that 14 prescription medications need more evidence before they are prescribed for so-called "off-label" uses. Off-label use occurs when a doctor prescribes medications to patients for conditions the drugs aren't specifically approved to treat. Of the 14 medications on the researchers' list are several drugs currently used off-label to treat conditions such as ADHD, depression, asthma, and bipolar disorder. Investigators say that in many cases, there is "weak scientific evidence" that these drugs can help conditions for which they are not approved.
