Obama wants digital health records in 5 years

In an effort to both revive the economy and modernize health care, President-elect Obama has proposed that all medical records be standardized and made electronic within the next five years. Obama believes the standardized records will improve patient care and reduce costs. But the plan has many hurdles, healthcare officials say. Only eight percent of the nation's hospitals and 17 percent of the country's physicians use the kind of computer system that would be required. Other experts say issues with patient privacy would need to be resolved before such a system could be put in place.
