Provigil may be addictive: study
The drug Provigil (modafinil) which is used to treat narcolepsy, and off-label to give a brain-boost to patients with ADHD and schizophrenia, may be more addictive than previously thought, a new study suggests. Researchers say that PET scans of the brains of healthy men revealed that the drug increased dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is a "feel good" neurotransmitter that is triggered by other habit-forming stimulants. Until now, scientists had believed that Provigil was less habit-forming than Ritalin and Adderall, but they point out that any drug that increases dopamine has the possibility of being habit-forming.
