Cursing after you feel pain may help you bear it more, a small study of college students suggests. Researchers studied 67 students who were asked to submerge their hand in ice water. Some were given permission to swear, while others were told to repeat an innocuous word when they felt pain. The students who swore could handle the ice water longer, and they had a higher heart rate than the other group. Researchers say cursing may be a sign of aggression that reduces the feelings of pain in much the same way that fear can.
