Scientists at Louisiana State University say that despite popular thinking, ADHD meds may work by improving concentration and attention, not memory or intelligence. In a guest editorial published in the Journal of Attention Disorders, Professor Claire Advokat indicated that many people assume ADHD meds will help them achieve higher levels of academic and workplace achievement, but she indicates that ADHD sufferers are still less likely to graduate from college than their non-ADHD peers, and are more likely to have lower grades. Advokat says that researchers, doctors, and patients should understand that ADHD meds may not be "cognitive boosters" at all.
