C-section anesthesia not linked to learning disabilities

A new study has found that exposure to anesthesia during C-section does not increase a child's risk of learning disabilities down the road. The report, published in the journal Anesthesia, looked at 5,320 children living in Minnesota between 1976 and 1982. Researchers found that the rate of learning disabilities later in life was approximately the same for children born vaginally and those who had been exposed to general anesthesia during birth. Surprisingly, the researchers noted that the risk of learning disability was five percent lower than average for children whose mothers had been given a local anesthetic.  Read full story >
