In the modern world, the ability to multitask can be a point of pride for harried people, but experts say it may do more harm to productivity than good. A new study found that people who did multiple tasks in a variety of technological media--such as email, texting, talking on the phone, and Web surfing--did worse on tests in which they needed to switch attention from one task to another. Researchers found that heavy multitaskers were more easily distracted by irrelevant information, and they tended to lack focus. Experts say that instead of being more productive, these heavy multitaskers were less productive than people who performed only one activity at a time.
