Family doctors prescribe most mental health drugs

A new study has found that fifty nine percent of mental health prescriptions are written by family doctors, not psychiatrists. General practitioners write most of the prescriptions for antidepressants and for stimulant medications used to treat ADHD, and they write a large percentage of meds to treat bipolar disorder and schizophrenia as well. Experts say this fact raises questions about what training a doctor should have before they are able to put patients--especially children--on mental health drugs.    Read full story >
