New Rules Give Gays, Friends Hospital Rights

President Barack Obama has made moves to issue new rules that will allow gay and lesbian partners to visit one another in the hospital and to make decisions about their care--a benefit of marriage that has long been denied to them. The president ordered his health secretary to issue these rules to hospitals that participate in the government-funded programs Medicare and Medicaid. Experts say the directive will require hospitals to respect the legal documents of a patient who requests a non-related family member to be by their side. The rules will also apply to non same-sex partners, such as widows or people with distant family, who may want a friend with them in the hospital.
