Food Dyes Linked to Hyperactivity, Allergies, Cancer: Study

According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), food dyes commonly used in foods from cereals and candy to fruit drinks may cause hyperactivity, allergic reactions, and even cancer. The authors of the report say three of the most-used dyes--Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6--are known carcinogens, and have been linked to ADHD and cancer as well. Manufacturers put 15 million pounds of 8 common dyes into food each year, the CSPI says, while other countries, including Great Britain and the European Union, have phased out or are requiring labels warning about the risks of food dyes.
