Psychiatric Nurses

Psychiatric Nurses have received their nursing degrees and often have continued their education to receive their Master’s Degree and have specialized in mental and emotional disorders. Psychiatric Nurses can work in Mental Illness Treatment Centers, as patient advocates, as counselors, and crisis intervention specialists.

Nurse Practitioners

A Nurse Practitioner is a nurse that has received additional training and education in diagnosing and treating illnesses. Some may specialize in mental health issues. Nurse practitioners can prescribe medications, provide treatment and referrals, and perform physical examinations. The Nurse Practitioner differs from a medical doctor in that their emphasis is on providing information and education to patients for overall wellness.

Social Workers

Social Workers are licensed and able to treat and diagnosis individuals. They are able to provide therapy and counseling. Social Workers also work as patient advocates, helping to locate and secure services in their communities for patients with mental illness. Social workers can also provide emotional support for the families affected by individuals with mental illness.
