Avoiding and Treating Poison Ivy, Oak and Sumac

(Page 3)

Moderate to severe contact dermatitis from poison ivy may require a 10 to 14 day course of and oral steroid. Higher doses are usually confined to the first 3 to 5 days, followed by gradual lowering of the daily dose. Less than 10 days of oral steroid has been associated with a higher risk of rebound (recurrence of the rash). Strong oral antihistamines and topical salves (including topical steroid) are often included in the treatment plan. A doctor should always guide you through treatment for severe contact dermatitis.

Camping during the summer can be a lot of fun, but poison ivy can be the spoiler.

Remember the 5 Ps: Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance (and helps to avoid camp disasters)

Have a nice summer!
