I'm in my teens, and at the moment, I have a face rash, for the last year or two. My mum suggests I don't see the doctor but make sure to write down the things I ate and drink. I have recently notice, if i don't eat milk or chocolate, the rash seems to dim down, and my face isnt so itchy ...

    Hi Gracie x,

As a teenager, your body is going through many many changes, and while the issues you are experiencing may be related to foods, there are many other things that could be happening and only a medical professional can tell for sure. I suspect without seeing you that you could be dealing with some acne or possibly rosacia.

However, you can do some research here on Health Central and find information that will help you when it comes time to ask the questions. You can also find information to show your mum, so maybe she will understand that it is possible this might be more than a chocolate issue!

You can check your symptoms here.

Stay in touch and let us know how you are doing and what the doctor had to say!

Is the rash worse near your mouth....especially in the corners of your mouth?  If so, you may be allergic to fluoride.  I found out the hard way that fluoride was the cause of a rash I had for MANY years!  I had tried everything to get rid of it, and then (bad idea) tried a friend's prescription cream a doc had given him for a rash on his hands.  The cream had fluoride in it and my rash went crazy.  I finally had to see a doctor and he said that I not only had fluorosis, but now had steroid dermatitis too because of the cream.  He told me that fluoride is not necessary for adults; that it is only needed for the formation of teeth.  I started using fluoride-free toothpaste and drinking spring water instead of tap water and the rash went away!  (You can find fluoride-free toothpaste most grocery stores and more of a selection at health-food stores...Tom's of Maine makes a few flavors and Nature's Gate is another brand.)  I have had very little fluoride in the last 10 years and my teeth are just fine...and the rash has never returned!  You don't have to go crazy with it...a glass of tap water occasionally is ok and don't worry about washing etc....it only affects you when you ingest it on a regular basis and the worst thing is the concentrated amounts in regular toothpaste that sits in the corners of your mouth when you brush.  Hope this helps.  (PS, I have also found that both milk and chocolate make me break out...but when that happens, it doesn't look like a rash...it looks like cystic acne.)

thank you so much for posting this.  I am 36 yrs. old and dealing with rash around my mouth.  I went to a dermatologist and he prescribed metrogel and antiobiotics, which made things worse!  I am definitely trying the non-fluoride route.  I drink tap water daily about 6 to 7 glasses, will try the bottled instead.  I can't believe that going to a dermatologist doesn't give you the right answers.  Hope this works for me!  A million thanks!
