Of all the allergy symptoms I have, an itchy throat is the most bothersome for me. The only relief is when I can eat something and I cannot eat all day. Anyone have any suggestions?

I am currently taking Claritin and it's not doing its job!

Our health expert Kathleen MacNaughton’s SharePost Trigger Avoidance Key to Allergy Symptoms Control offers suggestions for how to minimize contact with your allergy triggers as an effective prevention tactic. Her sharepost Allergy Testing Can Help Identify Your Allergic Triggers is a good review of how your healthcare professionals can help assess your condition. Be sure to review the Treatment pages which include a discussion of so called second-generation antihistamines such as Claritin.

Chewing gum is the only thing I have managed to use that relives this! Keeps your mouth moist and prevents the itching, giving you some relief!

I too have suffered for for years with my itchy throat due to my allergies.  The only thing that works for me is Clartin-D..I am not conjested but something in the Clartin-D works..the plain Claritin doesn't work for me..I only end up taking the pills for a month or two out of the year.  The side effects for me is being unable to sleep, but its not as bad as my itchy throat.

Since you said the "D" part of the claritan keeps you awake, try taking Sudafed PE and not the Claritan with the "D".  You may be kept awake by the Pseudoephedrine in the "D".  The "D" is only a decongestant but I too willnotice sleep problems with the regular Sudafed and sometimes have to change to the Sudafed PE.  Hope it helps.

Whenever I get the "itchy throat", I try to drink something real cold (ice water, carbonated drinks, etc.).  It seems to help.  Also, when I eat during this time, I try to work in some spicy foods (i.e., Mexican--usually these contain lots of vitamain C).

I suffer from Hayfever, Cat Hair, Dust.. you name it. I tried over the counter meds for years.. only to find myself tired , groggy and them immune to them eventually. I tried Several Anti Histamine products and they made me tired as well. I had a friend that was taking Zyrtec and almost immediatly started feeling better without any side effects. She gve me 2 tablets(10mg) I know your not suppose to do that! So don't ! But it worked on the 2nd day. The 1st day I was a little sleepy, so I went to my DR. and he put me on 10mg 30 pills. They are a live saver. Funny thing is I also suffer a little from Anxiety and Zyrtec is also has some properties in it that helps a little from that. The Upside - No More Allergies . I mean NOTHING! Downside - I get dry mouth a lot, and I constantly carry water bottles , yes this is a side effect. I have been on Zyrtec now for 2 yrs and it has changed my life. I have to take it year around now and that is another side effect that the doctor didn't tell me about, My Summers are worse and I stopped taking it in the winter for a week but I get itchy, I have been told since it blocks my histamine this does happen so owell I am on it all year around and I have not built up a tollerance for it same dose 10mg 1 time a day and I function like a normal Human. But I still don't like Cats!! Sorry all Cat Lovers! :)

I checked around on several online Pharms and even Walgreens wants $75.00 for 1 month supply. I get mine at www.medsRXshop.com for $27.00 for a 2month Supply!! I am not selling her just suggesting to try this medication if you have allergies. But I have not found a better and cheaper place for this med than that site where my friend sent me. I can imagine living without it. It's at my door like clockwork every 60 days.

Check with your doctor and see if Zyrtec is the right med for you and please let me know if you have the same relief I did!

    Happy New Years ALL!

I just developed this allergy last year.  I started the Target knockoff brand of the Claritin and it dries up my nose but, like you, does nothing for my throat.  I chew gum when my throat feels dry and itchy, that may be a better option than eating.

Hi, I have the exact same problem year around and it is the worst symptom for me too. The only thing I have tried that works is Flonase by prescription, but that involve spraying stuff up your nose which I am not a fan of. I want to find ann alternative, but I don't know if there is one :( If you don't mind spraying liquid up your nose, that is the best! I took it for 6 months and the symptoms were gone! I just hate using it!

    Hope this helps,

I found an alternative: NasalCrom! You have to take it 4 times a day and it is also a nasal spray. It works great after you use it for a week; it is like Flonase in that way, but has no steroids!! Once or twice a week I also use a Netti Pot to irrigate my nasal passageways and find that it removes the flem from my throat pretty well! Hope this helps all of you.

When going the alternative medicine route one is often left to research and experiment to find the right products and resources. Here is a new site that is beginning to gather all the resources in one place. You can research conditions for various therapeutic modes, including Ayurvedic medicine, and get information about the effectiveness of therapies and remedies. The site is also a launching point for researching integrated alternative medicine therapies on the web. Go to http://www.rvita.com  .

There's new information on what itchy throat is and what causes it on the site

Itchy Throat? It's Called Oral Allergy Syndrome

It's related to pollen allergies and gets worse during allergy season for some people.

Does anyone notice which foods really get the itching going? Is it fruit, vegetables or nuts? Does it itch less when the food is cooked?

I'm curious what people are experiencing. Thanks!

Yes, I have an itchy throat!! I am also a Zyrtec taker and recently tried the generic brand but it is not working. I thought it was phycological at first becuase almost instantly after the switch I was sneezing, running nose, night time drainage (sore throat in morning) and I have had an itchy throat ever since. I am going to try switching back, but I need relief as well. It is keeping me up at night, becuase the itchy throat causes me to cough.

This is also my first year experience allergies. I believe mine are indoor from dust. I get an incredibly inchy throat that I cough none stop until i have watery eyes, almost like I am choking for air. I find it interesting that you believe milk is associated with allergies. I drink serval glasses a day. This could have  major impact. My allergies are worse at night but always bad in dusty places.

Yes, bananas.  If cooked no problems.  This has just started in the last few years.  Today I also noticed it happen with a raw plum.  It goes away after awhile.  I have been avoiding bananas.  Any other suggestions?  If I continue to eat bananas will the itching at the back of my mouth/throat get worse?

If I eat peanuts, blackberries, corn syrup I get the itchy throat. I describe it more as a "raw" throat with a razor blade sitting on my tonsil...It's IRRITATING as heck!

Food is very responsible for allergies I'm finding out.  Recently, my daughter discovered a bunch of food intolerances and so did I through the elimination diet.  As we added back foods, YIPES...reaction CITY!

So, she and I are writing a book together called Gluten (and Rice) Free in Poverty, a book about eating without gluten, rice, other allergens on a small budget like we are.

My throat is soo itchy from my cat. I went to the allergist and he gave me an RX for Asetlin and it works but is soo nasty. it's a nose spray that drips down your throat almost instantly. that alone is enough to make me stop using it. i need something else. Claritin and Zyrtec do nothing for me =( and i'm afraid of benadryl because it makes me so groggy. help!

I have tired many different types of medicines: sprays, pills, syrups. I find spray is the best for anti-drowsy, Nasonex is non-drowsy and does not drip but still needs to be sprayed in the nose.

    Hi,

I am a board certified allergist in the Chicago area. I see many patients with similar complaints. I generally ask them several questions (over about 20 minutes) that detail the frequency, duration and pattern of symptoms. I ask about other nasal allergy symptoms (runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing etc.). It is important to establish whether this is seasonal or year round. Are there any foods that make it worse (possible oral allergy syndrome)? What is in your environment (pets, old sofa, carpets...)

I inquire about family history of allergy or other problems. Are there other medications, prescribed or non -prescribed, being taken? A physical exam is done focusing on the upper airway and throat. The chest is also evaluated for signs of asthma. The skin is examined for allergic signs or rash.

Skin testing is done to look for allergic triggers (pollen, mold, animal dander, dust mite, insects, and food).

A comprehensive evaluation by a board certified allergist should be done.

A lot of interesting suggestions for treatment have already been made. The problem is your diagnosis has not been made. Some of the suggestions are not without risks (despite some of the drugs being over the counter).  They all have potential side effects. The benefits from some of them may outweigh the risk if they are taken for the correct diagnosis.

Severe throat swelling may be life-threatening. The trigger of your throat symptoms should be identified.

Perhaps you have environmental allergy or possibly there is a food or drug allergy, or something else. A thorough evaluation by a qualified doctor is indicated. Delay in diagnosing your problem may be risky for you. My advice is for you to see an allergist at your earliest convenience.

    Hi Mena,

Your symptom complex sounds a lot like allergic rhinitis (typically called hay fever). There are many discussions about allergic rhinitis on this HealthCentral site. You should see a board certified allergist as soon as you can. If you are in an HMO ask your primary doctor for a referral to an allergist. There are specific medications which may be very helpful to you but first your trigger factors must be identified. Food allergy is doubtful..., but yet possible. Your entire history, regarding this problem should be reviewed, followed by a physical exam and skin testing.

    Good Luck!

    Hi,

Gargling in the morning and at night basically keeping your mouth clean helps. And also keep your nose dry. But sounds like you have sinus infection. If you don't have this problem anymore please let me know what's working for you?

For the past 2 months I've had a tickle in my throat It comes and goes and when it comes there's no relieving it, although it only last for a few minutes and it's bad enough that it wakes me up in the night.  I went to see a dr. as an aquaintace of mine had an itchy throat for about a year and chalked it up to allergies and unfortunately he passed away a few weeks ago from troat cancer. Never neglect your health or self-diagnose.  I don't have allergies but my doctor said they can come on at any age and I have no other symptoms.  The only thing I do have is a very dusty house as it is a new constuction and will take time for the heaviest of dust to be gone for good.  I just started taking Non-Drowsy Aerius Allergy yesterday and last night I had my first full nights sleep in months, and I haven't had the tickle/itch yet today.  Good Luck!!

    Cool

    almost same here....

itches for couple minutes n gone...

if you try to make it go away by scratching(moving tongue from the back or kinda coughing) it make it worst, makes me sneez, give me watery eyes, then i get runny nose, feels like itches back of my ear and throat...and it goes away after couple minutes... and i have stuffy nose all day long(only when i m not moving arround like walking or doing some physical work) also headache comes and go all day long

This started back like 5 years ago...

when there was construction going arround one of my house...

i thing it's the "Joint Compound" they use to smooth out the sheetrocks. When Joint Compound is sanded, the dust from it really scratches your throat...

after this happned to me... i started getting itchy throat when room temperature changes really fast... like when i start heat in my car when its cold outside... i think, tempreature wise most of the times it's HEAT that trigers it.

a year ago i had a really bad sore throat... and i knew it started from this throat itch...

    first i had itchy throat

    then runny nose and headache

    then sore throat

    then fever

so i was like this for about 3 days...

went to the doctor told her about how i thought it happend...

she gave me insulin for throat cuz i had a positive result for sore throat infection...

and she gave me zyrtec (not the prescription one).

so i started having zyrtec 10m ... n had it for 3 months.. worked preety good...

then i started getting itchy eyes!!! that was bad!

cuz of itchy eyes i had to stop taking them...

now i take them when ever i get itchy throat or when ever i think it will be a bad day if i dont take it... cuz i dont like taking any medicine everyday or getting itchy eyes for taking em every day and get addicted to them...

so its been a year now... winter is here... and heat is killing me now...

i am taking zyrtec almost every day... some how my nose feels like it's burning from inside... and zyrtec does not work some times...

    i need a perminant fix(treatment) for this!

sometimes i feel like cutting my throat out and scratch it! or

put some kind of shield inside! i hate it!

hey i got a question! Can some kind of surgery be done on it!?

    Thank You

I've found something that helps me. I've been getting itchy throat off and on -- just started getting really bad in the last few weeks. Two nights ago it was torturing me, and I went out to Whole Foods to see if there was anything natural I hadn't tried yet. On the way in was a display of grapefruit and slices to sample. I took a bite of one, AND IT HELPED, practically right away. Suddenly, my throat was tolerable. Not great, but tolerable. I bought some whole grapefruit and some (fresh) grapefruit juice and have been eating and drinking lots over the last 48 hours. And... it has really helped. Things are not perfect, but my throat is far less itchy.

I did a little research and came up with quercetin as the reason why the grapefruit may be helping me. If you don't hate grapefruit, you might consider giving it a try. The ruby red grapefruit is often pretty sweet, not super sour. Quercetin is also sold as a supplement, but I haven't gone that route yet, since I'm still improving with the fresh stuff.

I have an awful itchy throat, and ears and itchy cough.  I take OTC Zyrtec everyday, and when my itchy throat creeps in - I take Singulair too.  Just recently, the singulair hasn't been doing the trick.  I also noted that when I eat fresh veggies (especially corn on the cob) - my mouth and throat will itch for days!

To help me sleep, I usually use a mouth spray that numbs my mouth and throat.  I've even tried putting Oragel on the itchy spots and that helps.  :)  Good luck

I have the same allergy except whenever I eat certain FRESH fruits and nuts such as almonds, apples, PEACHES, pears, oranges, strawberries, cherries, kiwi and bananas my throat begins to swell causing me to hyperventilate, and my lips swell. This doesn't happen with canned fruit (ONLY FRESH or DRIED fruit).  During one of my attacks at work, 5 minutes after eating some beautiful fresh bright red strawberries, I began to choke and couldn't breathe, out of desparation and several attempts of doucing me with water, my boss shoved Half & Half milk down my throat.  Wah-Lah! My cure.  From that time on I drink "MILK" to stop the attack.  That's what works for me.

This reaction may be due to an allergic response to the pesticides used in these fruits. I could only eat fruits I could PEEL for years - now I eat organic peaches, grapes, strawberries, nectarines, and so on and have no problems.

What a relief to find that I'm not a freak with my itchy throat! I had a severe (4 month) cough at the end of 2007 and since then I've had an itchy throat that comes and goes several times an hour and it's like a prickle that occurs around the back of my palate. An ENT doctor had little to suggest but my GP practice nurse suggested trying a steroid nasal spray for a month (which I'm doing) to treat a possibly nasal drip. I've no noticeable effects yet but I'll try anything. I've never had allergies before but my daughter gets hay fever and asthma. I've had this in all sorts of environments in winter, spring and summer so dust and pollen seem to be ruled out.

Hello you poor things!!  Having not had a cold for years I've now had nine months of these so-called 'allergy' symptoms thinking I was sufffering alone- it was a relief to find this site!

I had woken at three thirty this morning as usual due to the severe itching in my palate and then ears and throat; several hot drinks one after another help produce lots of mucus that then seems to clear the itching and after about three hours and five or six various drinks, teas, cocoa etc. I can be symptom free for the rest of the day.  FIVE HOURS WITHOUT FOOD OR DRINK WHILE ASLEEP SEEMS TO 'GROW' WHATEVER IT IS BACK TO THE POINT I WAKE WANTING TO SCRATCH MY MOUTH TO BITS. Even the corners of my mouth itch.  Recently I met a lady working at my chemists who has had this for three years so I wasn't very happy to hear that!!!

I've had sinus infections twice in two months and had penecillin.  Had wondered if a complicated broken nose operation last year could have given me this itching. My Doctor is worried and wants me to see an Ear Nose and Throat man if it goes on.

Nystatin for oral thrush had no effect.

Some days or nights for several hours my chest gets involved and I get mucus building up and sound like an old bronchitic smoker - I have never smoked and always keep our home relatively dust and mould free (not obsessive about it) and my none of the family have ever had asthma, exzema or frequent coughs or any hayfever.  We have always had an outdoor cat and an elderly spaniel, and a couple of hamsters - but Xmas 2007 got a tropical fish tank - have wondered about that as it was the only new thing.

Refused to use the steroid nasal spray as I always read the possible side effects and want to find a permanent and more natural solution.  At the moment I'm just glad I don't have a partner as first thing every morning I use half a loo roll as I sneeze/cough up this clear or yellow mucus! Yuk!!!  Luckily the kids seem to not notice.

I have tried exclusion dieting (dairy, sugar, caffeine) I have been off Wheat and other grains for several years after I got severe symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and panic attacks when I started baking and eating my own ''good old fashioned'' wholemeal bread!!! I couldn't even walk upstairs for the pain and swelling of all my joints!! (All those symptoms disappeared as soon as I stopped eating grains.) For the itching I've bought anti - allergy pillows and new beds even!! Made absolutely no difference.

Has anyone tried Hypnosis or Acupuncture? Is this itching just our bodies over - reacting to things they should not normally react to and which cannot really harm us? Some nights it is almost as if my body seems to be 'crying' and I wonder if a jolly good cry might cure it all. I try to fit in an afternoon med. or sleep so I don't end up feeling so exhausted by the lack of rest.  Good luck to everyone here - keep us in touch with any good results!! X

I had the itchy throat for years and years so bad I was embarrassed to go to church because I couldn't keep quiet from the spazmodic coughing! I tried EVERYTHING prescribed from my Drs. and two allergists.  I also have a homeopathic Dr. who gave me the gargles, and natural herbs and stuff - no results. My husband has bad allergies and had taken DRIXORAL, he bought off the store shelves, two times a day for 25 years. It only cost about 10.00 a box. He swore by it and I had tried it occasionally over the years but only for a couple of days. Finally, I got so desperate I took one every day for a couple of weeks and DRIXORAL GAVE ME RELIEF!

Then the Government stepped in and passed laws making it hard to get. We had to constantly worry about getting our DRIXORAL because you were limited to two... then one box every two weeks by pharmacies. Last year it became unavailable in the U.S. My husband got very ill. His nose stopped up so badly he got a sinus infection and couldn't eat. I started coughing again and developed cold air asthma! Drs. gave me more medicines that didn't work.

I went to my computer and found I could order DRIXORAL from Canada. My husband is now perfectly clear again and I found that DRIXORAL stopped my itchy throat and asthma again. I tell you it's the greatest medicine known to mankind! We have NO SIDE EFFECTS either except for a little dry mouth on my part. I sometime carry a drink with me too from years of having to in order to sooth my throat. If I get a little dry mouth I carry gum, hard candy or cough drops to keep my saliva running so that helps with digestion too.

Try DRIXORAL for at least a month. I think you will get relief.

I have your problem.  Once my throat starts itching, I start coughing and can hardly stop until I almost throw-up or wet my pants.  My allergy doctor said I had a very sensitive throat.  I take Visrx, it's a one pill in the morning and one a night dosage.  I have cut down to 1/2 pill morning and night.  Then I use Patanase spray for when it flares up if I  "smell" something that really gives me a coughing fit.  This is the only thing that works.  I have tried them all.  I have dry mouth, but who cares?

    To sufferers of itchy throat,

I suffer from a itching throat too and asthma. What a great combination... Whenever I would get that annoying itch in the back of my throat, I would cough rapidly and then sometimes I would wheeze. I would wake up in the middle of the night and cough up mucus. I say the TEMPORARY cure for the wheezing is to breathe in humid, hot air in your shower or bathtub. As for the itch, I have no cure. However, try drinking tea or grape juice. It helps just a tad. My doctor perscribed me Singulair and my itch has relieved just a tad. But not completely yet, because this my second day taking the pill.

    Hi,

Have you tried homeopatic medicine?  I tired Hyland's Allegy relief and it works great for about 2 hours, you can take them as long as you need since they're not drugs and there's no side effects.  Hope this helps, I know I was glad when it was recommended to me.

I've had an itchy throat for about a week now and nothing has given me relief. I finally went to the doctor and was told that it may have started out as an allergiy but had turned into a bronchial infection. I have been placed on antibiotics and cough medicine so that the fluid in my left lung can begin to dissipate. i have no other symptoms other than my itchy throat. The doctor advised me that had it been allergies, the claritin would've cleared up the problem.

Try Mucinex or the store's brand of that product.  The ingredient does much more than what they advertise.  How about ringing or buzzing in the ears - it helps that too.

Hi this is Jan - I wrote on Saturday September 20th.   Since then I have had a chest XRay because I was rattling in the nights, but the results were 'nothing wrong' - and the rattle often clears up in the daytime.

I was determined to find the cause since my Doctor couldn't find anything infectious. It seemed far worse some days and nights than others, suggesting a 'trigger' that was only occasionally there.   I knew that food intolerances were a possible cause, but which foods?  Something regularly in my diet, clearly.  Foods take several days to leave the body so we have to exclude them for quite a time before a change or improvement might be noticed.

I rang an Acupuncturist who is a retired General Practitioner today; he had never heard of 'oral allergy syndrome' but would be happy to give me £300 's worth of Acupuncture just to try to 'cure' me.  Hmmmm - no I don't think I can afford that luxury!!

Then tonight my son asked for a baked potato so I microwaved one and mashed it with butter for him.  I had just eaten a bit of the kids' bolognese tomato and lamb sauce as I was hungry too, though I don't touch the spaghetti due to my wheat allergy.

I HAVE KNOWN SINCE I WAS AN ADULT THAT POTATOES HAD TO BE PEELED UNDER RUNNING WATER AS OTHERWISE MY FACE WOULD ITCH.  I ALSO WAS AWARE THAT WHEN I ATE CHIPS OR ROAST OR MASHED POTATOES THAT THEY WERE 'THE LOVELIEST FOOD' - AND I WOULD HAVE TO BE VERY SELF CONTROLLED AND NOT EAT TOO GREEDILY.  THIS EVENING I GOT POTATO ON MY FINGER AND ATE IT. WITHIN AROUND FIVE MINUTES MY LIPS WERE STINGING AND THE INSIDE OF MY MOUTH ITCHING REALLY BADLY.  I SAT DOWN AT THE LAPTOP AND PUT IN A GOOGLE SEARCH FOR POTATO ALLERGY.  I THEN FOUND THE FOLLOWING :-

    http://www.allergiesexplained.com/20-Potato-and-other-foods-can-cause-eczema.htm

by Dr. H. Morrow Brown ( in the UK which is where I am)  Please read this long article talking about our symptoms as well as others and giving details of patients whose lives have been completely changed.  I am going to alter my diet drastically now, and expect to have good results.  If POTATOES/ TOMATOES/ PEPPERS etc have been causing my itching mouth ears and lips then I will write to him to thank him.  I have been growing tomatoes and eating them all this year and growing pepper plants indoors and eating them - these are also implicated in his research into these symptoms. Good Luck !!!

Although the doc'c comment is true - diagnosis is best, the other comments are true too, sometimes you end up with many drugs, bills (depending on your insurance) and few or conflicting answers. Here are some things I use very successfully to stop the tickle. It is not exactly an itch however so they may not work for you. I drink all day long - water with lemon, hot water with lemon, herbal tea with lemon, soda water (no calories salt or sugar)(most cafe's can be persuaded to understand that it is the same as water and should be free). NO caffeine, sugar, honey... as they dry the throat. If you need your caffeine just have it and then go back to the other stuff. Depriving your self of joy in life will not help anything :) If keeping lemons or juice at work is hard - get citric acid powder (spice section at any of your natural foods or middle eastern/indian/asian markets) and you can add it (and it is cheap) Other things that can provide relief but not add calories: Licorice pastilles: Singers use them to relax and clear the throat before singing. They use the ones with no sugar - just licorice. This is not your Good and Plenty sweet chewy licorice. It's potent, hard drops of real black licorice extract. Yummy and addictive to those who have acquired a taste for it, but shockingly bitter to those expecting little kids' movie theater licorice. Also note it can be hard on the tummy so try a couple and see how you do. I can;t find the ones I used to use but these are nice and small like those: Here are some things I found on the web today http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0006NXXGE?smid=A1KTH924LYM2YH&tag=nextag-hpc-delta-20&linkCode=asn these are larger and I would have to break them in pieces but you might not http://www.dutchlicorice-onlineshop.com/product_info.php?products_id=196&osCsid=b3782244a0a54c804a59752dfb3ff3b3 I also can't tell if these have sugar - but there is a link to submit questions. More easily accessible and not so strong b/c they are sweetened with a small amount of rice syrup- and I also use them when I have a cough/cold I use Zand cough drops (I use a knife to chop them into ~2-3 pcs while still wrapped) (you can get them at any Wholefoods and many smaller chains or local natural food stores. http://www.zand.com/product_individual.asp?productid=612 I also use the Airborne gummi lozenges but only when I travel to at least think I am keeping other people's germs away. But these have sugar so... I can only find them in CVS, not walgreens, walmart or my local grocery - not sure where you are or what you have. Hopefully some of this helps Good luck

I have suffered from allergies for a long time, cat dander, dust, mold, poplar trees and now possibly tomatoes. I've used "Aerious" for years now, without any side effects and have taken it year round, it works on all symptoms and is best for people with high blood pressure. I have also taken Flonaise, which works best if you have a sinus infection. However, along with the above mentioned med's I have found that a saline nasal rinse is the best. I use "Hydra-Sense", it relieves the over dried sensation in my nose and throat. There are lots of saline nasal rinses at the drug store, but I use Hydra-Sense because it's the biggest bottle available and it's not too pricey. It is safe to use as often as you like, so I give my self a shot every time I think about it, or each time I go into the bathroom. For really bad bout's I keep one on at my desk and use it while working. If used often, it gets rid of the stuff that seems to be impacted in there. Hydra- Sense is available with three stream strengths. I use the strong, then I know it's getting all though my sinuses. It may go down your throat a little bit, but I don't care. I need sinus relief!

I have had this same problem for years during spring and summer.  Itchy throat, itchy ears and even the sides of my mouth itching so bad that no scratch can help.  The only thing I have found to help is Flonase nasal spray and I have had no side effects.  This is available as a generic by prescription only of course, so with insurance, it only costs 4.00.  It has been a lifesaver for me.  It has taken the itching away completely.

I would recommend using a netipot daily or even twice a day depending on your symptoms.  It helped when I was having sinus issues after a pretty bad sinus infection.  It's also helping with my constant itchy ears and throat due to seasonal allergies.  The netipot helps clears the nasal passages of extra mucus and random things we breathe in (including pollen) and indirectly clears the sinus cavaties, helps to reduce inflammation, and also provides moisture to the nasal passages.

Being on meds everday is not good for the body for obvious reasons.  Every medicine has a negative effect on the body whether you're conscious of it or not.  You can buy a Netipot at Bed Bath and Beyond or possiblly a local health foods store (e.g. Rainbow Grocery in San Francisco).

After trying almost every remedy I could find on the internet, I had given up.  It's been 2+ years of this on/off itchy throat that causes me to gag, cough all night & usually end up sleeping in a almost sitting up position.  But NO more.

    The solution:  NETI POT

I didn't even try it for itchy throat, I just tried to clear my sinuses to avoid another sore throat with sinus infection.  And what do you know?  NO more itchy throat.  What a relief.  I typically use it once in the morning & once in the evening and I literally now am relieved of all of my allergy symptoms WITHOUT drugs.  Yea!

wow, most of you seem as desperate as I have been a few months ago. For the last few years I was getting horrible sinus infections and colds. I went back to the doctor every few weeks during the winter last year and he gave me so many doses of antibiotics my tongue turned a weird color (it's back to normal now) and I felt like a disaster. I also went to get acupuncture and took some tonics that gave me panic attacks. I tried chinese herbs, vitamins and almost everything you can find on amazon.com as well as your regular neighborhood pharmacy.

I did get some real good authentic chinese tea which helped my immune system a lot, but not sure what was in it so I won't get much into it. Instead I'll let you know what has helped me feel much healthier and get my post nasal drip under control. That according to my allergist and all the books I've read is the cause of an itchy throat. I either cough like crazy, or in worst cases can't even talk.

The main cause of is foods... stop eating anything with MSG, dairy, peaches... and anything you feel makes your throat feel worst. Drink lots of water... add some lemon too it in when you remember, especially in the morning. Use your netti pot at least once a day, this will fix your mucous membranes that are probably ruined due to the dry air, pollution and all the nasal sprays the doctors prescribe. I took nasonex for a few months and started getting nosebleeds. STAY AWAY FROM ANY CHEMICALS!

Learn about how to alkalize your body, this will help a lot also to get your immune system back on track. There are many books on the net.

Now for what I take daily that really helps.

Morning - 1 mega veggie tablet (botanic choice) , 1 calcium

Lunch - Allergy homeopathic allergy relief tablets (botanic choice), mucous relief complex (botanic choice)

    Dinner - 1 grapeseed extract

The botanic choice pills are the only natural tablets that I've tried that really work for me, as I have tried many that make symptoms much worse. There is also a company callled swanson vitamins that looks very similar but I'm sticking with what works for me otherwise I would try that too.

I wish you guys the best of luck. I went from taking allergy pills, and nose sprays every day to not injecting almost any chemicals into my body... definitely no pills or prescriptions for over three months. I have been diagnosed with serioius hay fever and now the season is in full swing. The one thing that I did notice is that when my nose is stuffy and I can't breathe at night it's better to unclog it with something than let the bacteria sit there and cause some kind of infection later. For that I use a spray (neo-synephrine regular non-drowsy) maybe once or twice a week. One spray is enough for a night, and there are weeks when I don't need it at all.

There are actually a few things that help. First, a nettie pot w/ saline solution. For some reason running this solution through your nose, helps keep whatever causes itchy throat away. Also, a visit to your allergy dr. The dr. is able to do a test and determine what you are allergic to and prescribe the correct treatment. A few things that help if you cannot go to the dr., are a brand of allergy pill called Wal-Zur (or wal-zyr). you get it behind the pharmacy counter only (the one on the floor is NOT strong enough). There is like a D or something after it like wal-zur d, or something, your pharmacist will know. This absolutely almost immediatly stops the itchy throat. its a 12 hr tablet so you need to take 2 a day. I had awful itchy throat, itchy inner ears, sneezing, etc, and this stops it all. Use this in conjuction with the nettie pot. Also be sure to change your sheets, and incase them in an allergy cover, and be sure to take a bath before going to bed at night to wash off any pollen thats on you, this is why sometimes its the worst at night and early morning. Good luck! Oh, and fruit, be careful, I noticed after eating fruit mine gets worse even with the pill.

I occasionally go through this and i think there is a corelation between low estrogen, or hormonal imbalance.

When on estrogen, these allergies do not exist.

Well, lets just say i was too lazy to warm up some hot water for my tea and i didnt want any "temporarily" relief. I want this itch/cough gone!!!

So after reading everyones suggestions, which, most, required me to purchase from the store, i decided to go with Dave's suggestion; I mean its free and I already have it in my pantry. And let me just say that this really, really, really works!!! (xxCross my heartxx)

I took 1 spoon full and just as Dave said, its taste funny, it feels really weird but good in a way (the part where the sauce coats the throat) and in a minute or two...the itch is gone!!!

There's the occassional cough but its not as bad as it was 10 minutes ago. Go try it!

**I may come back tomorrow to really let you know whether this was just temporarily or for good. Now to get rid of this cough---Aleve 2x.

Its me again, Tabzwifey and from my last post, I promise I was coming back to let you know if this worchester sauce was temporary or not and let me just say so far, with an occasional itch here and there, this seem to work!!!

I didnt take aleve right after as I said I would but I did find a some of my boyfriends' prescription cough syrup that I took so that seem to take care of my cough. I slept through the night without having to cough or run to the bathroom to cough out some phlem.

I did take 2x aleve just moments ago cause it seem i'm having a slight fever.

Just as if the Doctors prescribe, i'll probably take another shot of worcester sauce and cough syrup once a day, aleve for my fever, and drink lots of liquid (orange juice, water, tea.

To all who's reading this cause your going through what I'm going through, try this out and let me know how this remedy did for you! Take care!!

Way too many replies here - so I fear this suggestion may go unnoticed. But the most effective - almost perfect unless for extreme cases (such as recently I removed my floor tilings, exposing dust and now can't sleep at night) - is a Chinese Herbal Medicine - called Pang Da Hai Remember: Panda and say: Hi ! Ask a Chinese Herbalist and he will know. It's a sort of hard-stone fruit, dark purple/brown in colour. It is extremely effective - and always have helped me until now. Again, I did provoke my allergy by infesting my house with continuous dust! The way you prepare it is like this: You boil water and drop 2 or 3 of these berries. And allow the water to cool. When ready (after 20 minutes) you drink the tea. For a stronger effect - you eat the flesh of the berry as well. It tastes revolting. As a matter of fact it doesn't really taste of anything - but the texture of the pulp, sort of fleshy and flaky that sticks on the roof of your mouth, makes you wish for something else, or often you skip drinking it some nights in the hope the allergy won't attack you again. Before, I used to make the tea and leave beside my bed - in case I would wake up with terrible throat-itching. SO that is a good strategy because. When house is clean and dust-free I "usually" don't have problems. So no need to drink it religiously every night. Try it. And there is over 80% chance it will work for you - for ever and ever (unless you choose to live in a building site!) And if it does, remember me - for this most excellent tip ! :) PANG DA HAI (they give it opera singers to soothe their throats after a concert)

I have had the same problem ever since I was way young and it causes me to cough so hard I gag or even sometimes throw up or cough up large ammounts of flem. My doctor finally found out what the problem was when I was about 12 years old I have tried every medicine there is out there for coughs and the only thing that has ever worked for me is a pill called Tesent Supearl (not sure of the exact spelling so I spelt it how it sounds) It is an old old old pill that the used to give people who were going to into surgery and had a cough it is a pill that puts the cough to sleep. My allergy is called Tusacabit (not sure of the spellin on that either so I spelt it how it sounds) So I recomend you go talk to your doctor about this pill it works great! When I take it my cough completely goes away and I can sleep and all that good stuff!

    TRY THE NETI POT

I've been suffering for years with the same cough as all of you. I've been to an ear, nose, and throat doctor- spent way too much money, all for nothing. The Neti pot got rid of that annoying tickle in my throat in under a week. I also like that I'm not putting all those chemicals in my body. The 1st week, I also took over the counter Alavert allergy melt-in-your-mouth tablets along with using the neti pot twice a day. Now I do it once a day for maintenance. Try it if you are suffering!

Start with the neti pot and flonase or whatever an allergist recommends.

I would also recommend getting a "blood food allergy test"  Below is an example from the ibstreatmentcenter

It will tell you exactly what foods you are allergic to, no guessing.

I too suffer from this, especially at night throught the spring and fall. I find that taking Benadryl and/or using a sore throat spray helps me a lot. I took Claritin for my seasonal allergies and it did nothing to help. As far as I'm concerned Claritin is useless. I spray the throat spray as far down my throat as possible then swallow. It lasts for a couple of hours. Also drinking hot drinks helps me, like coffee or tea. Hope this is of some help to you.

  46. Liquid benedryl works quickly

The itchy palate is a result of allergies. The trigger varies between sufferers, but for me the only thing that helps is a small amount of liquid Benedryl(or the generic form of it, which is diphenhydramine). I'll take a teaspoon or two and make sure it comes in contact with the roof of my mouth. The itching calms down within a few minutes.

If the itching happens at night, I'll then take 25 mg in capsule form to prevent it from coming back later in the night.

The only problem is that I can't find the stuff in large bottles. I just see it in tiny 4 oz. bottles, intended for children. Which makes it expensive.

With allergies, most people do not know, but you have to stay away from All sugars, and foods with sugar until the it gets cold enough for the ground to start freezing. Also milk makes the mucus thick which also causes discomfort during allergy season. My family has suffered with this problem as long as I've been around (35 + yrs.).

  48. Carbonation works for me

I have had oral allergies for years caused by carrots, apples, etc. I find that if I steam things before I eat them it helps with the itching. But the best remedy I have found once the itching starts is drinking an ice cold carbonated beverage like another poster suggested. It seems to somehow disrupt the immune histamine response but it has to be carbonated, like the kind of carbonation that makes your eyes water a bit, else it won't work for me.
