Flood Cleanup & Recovery for Allergy Sufferers
I recently visited Nashville to help with the cleanup and recovery efforts following the flooding that occurred there. I was shocked by the level of devastation, but amazed by all of the volunteers who arrived from all over the country to assist in any way they could.
If you have been affected by the recent flooding, the cleanup process can be a bit daunting, but resources do exist, including A Field Guide for the Cleanup of Flooded Homes [pdf]. Because many residents do not have flood insurance, they will have to do much of the work themselves. Allergy sufferers may find the damp conditions especially difficult.
During the initial phases of the process, you will likely be emptying the house and ripping out carpet, flooring, and insulation. It is important to protect yourself from mold, dust and other contaminants by wearing a mask. Bleach is not recommended, as it may damage wood and some metallic surfaces. Products like Allersearch Allermold and Vital Oxide Mold Remover and Disinfectant help disinfect surfaces without damaging them.
Once cleanup is complete and you are able to move back into your home, dehumidifiers may be necessary to help regulate humidity and ensure healthier living conditions. If lingering odors are a problem, Gonzo Basement Odor Eliminator is a safe, non toxic product that is extremely effective for cleaning up musty odors.
