    Hi Jackie,

Do you mean that you get hives on your palate? Or do you get an itchy palate AND hives on your skin?

Some of these symptoms sound like oral allergy syndrome, otherwise known as itchy throat. There has been a long discussion on our site about this, with a response from Dr. Thompson. Read the itchy throat discussion thread here and see if what the readers are talking about applies to you.

You can also find an article about oral allergy syndrome on the site, listing its symptoms, possible causes and possible solutions to relieving the itch.

You may want to see if there is a particular food or something you come in contact with that causes the itch.

You'll need to see your doctor and explain your concerns and what you learned to get a diagnosis for your problem. Come back and let us know what the doctor says!

I have has these symptoms since I was a child, I am now 37 and just found out that I have OAS. I still can not each raw fruits, vegetables, some nuts, soy, and mustard seeds. I also break out in hives if I just touch the food and I also get hives from sun less tanners(spray tan) (they have carrot tine or citrus in the I believe). Now that I am older I am trying to watch my weight and I can not diet with the foods most people do. This is frustrating and I fear that my health down the line will pay. Is there any health risk to people that do not eat these foods? I do take vitamins from time to time, and eat cooked vegetables (not enough) but I still worry. Also any diet menu out there has raw fruits and vegetables in them and I do not know how I can watch my weight when I am not eating these items.

Again, you can try cooking some of the foods. Cooking or microwaving can destroy the proteins that triggers the allergies, but you must be careful becase this doesn't always work.

Have you been to the doctor to find out exactly what foods trigger the reaction? Perhaps you can eat more foods than you think.

yes,  the test was long and very painful (itchy!!) My list is very long, but what is strange is I can eat strawberries, grapes, and watermelon. (because they are in a vine maybe??) Anything from a tree or with root, it seems, I can not. I will try to microwave, I have not done that yet. But I would love to have raw veggies with dip someday!! :) Thanks for your input!

Finally they invented something that gets the medication directly to the itchy area. They are a pain to open unless you go thru life with sizzors in your purse.  Make sure you get the Adult not kids size
