Anaphylaxis & You - What You Need to Know

In my last post, I talked about allergies to medicine and how that can result in anaphylaxis. I thought I'd go into a bit more detail in this post about what anaphylaxis is and what you can do about it. Allergies come in many forms. There's the kind closely linked to asthma that can caus...

My new breastfed baby daughter got a rash on her bottom that got quite weepy and I had no idea what was causing it until I ran out of garlic and it cleared up.

We sat in the canteen at morning tea and as the young woman ate her toast we observed red spots appearing on her face and neck, finally someone commented on it and she said she did feel a bit funny in throat. By this time eyes were puffing and red spots welting, our boss, a volunteer emergency director had her in the car to hospital asap. By the time they got there she was having trouble breathing. She was off work for over a week. Cause-There was a hint of garlic butter on the knife used to butter her toast.

i also have that same problem, but without the red spots. my throat also closes more reguarly when i eat the stuff im allergic to. im also careful that i read labels and the ingredients when ever possible before i eat somthing, just to make sure. just so it does not happen again, i really suggest that you read labels and do what you need to do just to be safe. trust me, it helps. it can also save a life or two.

if i even eat one bite of tree nuts or any type of shellfish, i go straight into anaphylatic shock. no time for a epi-pen. im scared. what should i do?

Curtis... I'm sure this is frightening. I know I don't need to tell you to be super diligent in everything you eat. Don't let food pass your lips unless you know exactly what is in it and how it was prepared. If you don't think you'll have time to use an Epi-Pen, then be sure your co-workers, family and friends all know how to give the shot and where to find it on your person. You might also think about wearing a Medic-Alert type bracelet so that anyone finding you in shock can quickly identify what might be going on.

I don't have a comment, but I am concerned about my reaction to a Diamox RX I took, of 250 mg.  It was supposed to be 250 mg. b.i.d., but when I took the first dose, it (I suppose it was the medicine) made my arms and head and lips feel tingly.  I was taking it as a preventive for altitude sickness, as I am making a trip to New Mexico, where the altitude is over 9,000 feet.  I have been there before and had some shortness of breath, only slight, but I didn't think anything of it.  However, I was sick for about a month and a half with what an ER doctor said was "acute bronchitis."  With my last doctor visit, my chest was clear; however, I asked about the Diamox, as I had looked up altitude sickness on the net and it mentioned Diamox as a preventive for possible pumonary edema.  Can you give me any information on this?

Thanks, Paula

Paula... I'm not that familiar with Diamox. Your best bet is to discuss your concerns with your doctor and/or pharmacist. Good luck!

I would, but I got the prescription yesterday and took the first.  Didn't take the second because of the "feelings."  After 5 when started doing this yesterday.  I am on my way this a.m. to New Mexico.  I'm sorry you can't help me.  I really thought the site could help me.  I don't think I will take the medication, though.

Thanks, anyway,
