I, too, seem to have a more severe reaction than this article seems to suggest. After eating an unassuming raw fruit or veggie, I develop what seems to be hives in the back of my mouth and an itch that just can't be scratched. My family always knows when it starts because of how crazy I look trying to scratch the roof of my mouth with my tongue! Sometimes I also have a hard time swallowing. The reaction starts within minutes of eating the culprit food, but unfortunately, lasts for hours, if not, into the next day. After reading that anaphylactic reactions can occur, though, in rare cases, I'm definitely going to make an appointment with my allergist.
i have had crohns disease for 25 years.resection in 2000. although i am on medicstion for this, over the last year my lip will swell and occasionally my tongue.this will frequently be unilaterl which make it even starnger.i have been tested and ragweed seem to be the allergen.my question is ...since crohns is an auto -immnun disorder ...do think there is a connection? i have asked so many drs. and no-one has ever seen this.
i am a rn ,so i would understand any medical terminology ..i am just looking for some answers
thank you in advance

I'm sorry, Nancy, but I'm not really any kind of expert in Crohn's Disease. A quick web survey didn't turn up a connection between nasal allergies and Crohn's, but that doesn't mean there isn't one, if you were to delve deeper into the scientific literature. I did see some suggestions of a connection with food allergies, but not sure that's been proven at all either.
So sorry I can't offer anything more helpful...

Hi Kathleen, I'm an RN, too. I was wondering what your thoughts were on the possibility of cross-reactivity between trees & latex exposure? Several (maybe 10) years ago, I was orienting a new RN & we had a Latex sensitive pt to admit. I pulled out the hospital policy & the new RN noticed it had an item about peach allergies being similar to latex allergies. I am allergic to peaches & many other stone fruits. I have no apparent problem wit latex. I have OAS & have been skin tested. I even have an epi-pen because of the hives & throat swelling. I was tested for latex but came up negative- the tester seemed to lose track though while she was doing the test & I mentioned this nicely to the Dr. Thanks for the great article- I waited years to get tested because I thought I was losing my mind!
My 5 year old son's tongue has been itching for weeks. When it started he also had red sores, and after a while I saw white spots too. Dr says it's not a virus or bacteria..not Thrush. So no treatment. His doctor suggested staying away from cinnamin....and he had been eating a lot of cinnimin cereal. So far, after removing that from diet, tongue still itchy. He eats raw broccoli, but not a lot of fruit, other than apples.
I tried letting him suck on Zinc lozenges. He won't do salt water or strong mouthwash.
I feel so bad for him.
I have had it all my life, although I just recently put a name to it. I have it more severely than this article suggests. I will vomit if I eat any fresh fruits or vegetables, and most but not all nuts. I can eat all the canned or cooked fruits or veggies I want, but I always get that tingle with almonds, and usually throw up from walnuts.
