I'm happy to join the HealthCentral team! Allergies (skin, eye, nasal) are something that has affected me personally throughout my life, and have lately become my professional mission as well.
Growing up in western New York state, I always had eczema and nasal allergies. And sometimes, especially during exertion when playing outside on cold days, I would wheeze and cough as well. But my symptoms, though annoying, never really interfered that much with my daily life.
However, in my early 20s, I moved to southern NJ, an area filled with all sorts of asthma and allergy triggers and my symptoms increased significantly, to the point where I had to consult an allergist for diagnosis and treatmen for the first time. Turns out, I had moved to one of the worst places in the country for people with allergies and asthma, in terms of a long growing season, plenty of humidity, and a fair amount of air pollution.
Since that time in my life, I spent a lot of time learning about asthma and allergies and how to manage them. As a health professional (registered nurse), I have spent my entire career teaching people how to manage their health so that they can live healthy, happy, productive lives, despite any challenges they might be dealing with.
In the last few years, I've been writing health education content for a number of allergy and asthma websites, including http://www.RhinocortAqua.com, http://www.EverydayKidz.com, and the Asthma site at About.com. I really enjoy taking medical information and morphing it into language that anyone can understand. My goal is to give you the tools you need to succeed at living well with allergies.
I hope you'll join me in continuing to learn about this condition and how to manage it.
