Drug Allergies and Getting my Money Back

By Sloane Miller, Health Guide Thursday, December 13, 2007
Has this happened to you? You get a refill of a medication you've used without issue for years but then suddenly you have a reaction like redness, itching, hives or worse?   What happened? Did the formula change? Did the manufacturer change? Did you change?   It happened to me last...

Hi Sloane,

I was reading about your allergy and I had run across the definition of drug allergy on the site. It's located at this url if you would like to look at it.

Is it possible this is what you've experienced? Since you had used the drug for so long, is it possible your body developed antibodies over the 16 month break in use and then the histamines were released when you used the new tube?

Just a thought. I have had medicine allergies but usually it's the formularly change. Like  the non drying version of sudafed which used to be a gel is now a pill and the change in the delivery  is something I can not tolerate. So I  have no over the counter allergy relief :(

morning vicki,

thanks for the reply and the link!

it's so interesting. i think it was the formulation that i reacted to. here's why.

i called my derm doc and asked her for a prescription for an older version of retin-a, the gel formulation, that is now in a generic, it's so old.

retin-a is a great product and i knew it worked for me so i thought for $10 bucks [for the old generic formulation] i'd like to see if it will work without either an adverse or an allergic reaction.

i patch tested it for 2 days on my arm, no reaction. then tried a patch test on my face overnight and nothing. i have used it now for over 1 week, every other day, without incident.

no reaction at all!

which leads me to believe it was indeed the microbead formulation that i reacted to. now why after 16 months--who knows.

Well I certainly wish I could get the old formulation of the Sudafed Non-Drying but apparently due to misuse it is no longer manuafactured and now the buffered pill formula is all I can use. Problem is that I am also on an aminophyline (sp) inhaler and can not use it if I am taking the new formulary Sudafed. If I do, I feel like I am having a heart attack!!

Well glad you got your refund and you have a solution you can use!

Curious about Painful Allergic Reaction

I have deduced that it may be Retin-A but I am still isolating the changes to my routine including stopping my new soap and sunscreen to no avail. I too have broken out in red hives and itchy sore skin on my hands especially between the second and third fingers. Not on my face.

Any news about this odd reaction would be appreciated. It has kept me awake at night and in pain throughout the day.

No not yet. I have been low on energy working long hours and battling the flu, and although painful, this was necessarily down on my list.

i hear you. take care of that flu first! stopping everything, like soaps and creams and the retina is probably smart.

you might consider calling your family doc to talk over the phone abt symptoms until you can get there or if they have a nurse/physicians asst to talk to in your doctor's office that would be helpful too.

let me know what doc says or if it abates once you've stopped using all the various products.
