Did you hear about this scary story: a 35-year-old man died of a shellfish allergy at a Ruby Tuesday restaurant in Georgia. "Rodney "Krook" Hawkins' wife, Linda, disputes the Maryville, Tenn.-based chain's account, saying -- through a family representative -- that her husband did not order the Chick...

I have often wondered what happened when reading about people who have unfortunately died from anaphalxis. Where was their epi-pen?  Did they know they were allergic?  Sloane Miller wrote an excellent article detailing both the allergic persons and restaurants responsibility about food allergies.  I have an allergy to shellfish and my daughter has one to peanuts.  Personally, I do not feel comfortable eating in my local Ruby Tuesdays due to inconsistant answers from the staff there. This is not limited just to Ruby Tuesdays --  I've been told by a waitress at Fridays that they serve absolutely no peanuts, but then noticed a Reesesdesset on the menu.

Those with allergies must be very viligilant and restaurants/waiters/chefs must take allergies more seriously. Thank you to Sloane Miller for explaining that so well.

    Hi Sloane:

A Carrabas is near us and they have been very good with our daughter's peanut allergy.  A chef came out the first time we went there and whenever we have requested it.  I am not sure if I would take a child with wheat or milk allergies there, but they are very knowledable with nut allergies.

The IHOP near us is good as well.  They have some entrees with tree nuts but none with peanuts.
