Dr. Nicholas Christakis certainly caused quite a stir on the blogs when he said that school and parents are engaging in mass panic about food allergies. I didn't necessarily disagree with him. Here's what I said on Healthcentral.com.   This past year, Time Magazine reporters have written sever...
  1. Peanut allergy ignorance

I have a SEVERELY food allergic child who begins to react at the smell of nuts roasting.

Her reaction to any amount being ingested...as little as residue left at her eating surface, can be fatal.  This is from our allergist, not me.

While I agree some children are mildly allergic, there are those few who are extremely severe.

I am offended and worried about these claims by Nicholas A Christakis who has not taken into account the very real danger for those who are truly that severe.  I have to say anyone dying so others don't have to be inconvenienced is appalling.  I think many opinions would change if it was their own child's life at risk.

In discussing these "treatments" we hear of on the news with our allergist, he too is angered at the inaccuracy of the message conveyed.  The study can only be done on those with MILD allergies, and while many will fit into this category, there are some, such as my daughter, that can die from the ignorance further fueled by irresponsible reporting.
