I have had contact dermatitis for about 30 years. It is most prevalent on my eye lids but also shows on my ears and chin. The most common cause is synthetic fragrance and the laundry detergent and candle aisles are the worse. The fragrance comes through the air and appears a day or two later as an itchy rash. Lanolin is another culprit and is in a lot of soaps and lotions. I read the labels VERY carefully. If I know I have been exposed to synthetic perfumes (candle stores, Pier 1, etc.), I can proactively put some Dermarest Eczema lotion on my spots. Even though this is not eczema, these types of lotions can halt the reaction or at least minimize it. It is also good at reducing the itching and length of reation once the reaction has occurred. Do minimize the amount you use on your eye lids as any cortizones will thin the skin. Note that not all synthetic perfumes are bad. I can use Dawn original dish detergent but have to use fragrance free Tide. Also be careful about "unscented" products. These sometimes have a masking fragrance to make them not smell. These fragrances can also cause a reaction.
