Food Allergy Etiquette for Thanksgiving and Holiday Parties

By Gina Clowes, Health Guide Tuesday, November 24, 2009
Thanksgiving and other food-focused celebrations can be a challenge for those with food allergies and special dietary needs.  Most dishes are made from scratch by cooks who don't have to think about allergens or cross-contamination on a daily basis.    Unfortunately, there is no rule...

THanks for all the tips..they are very helpful. We recently had a holiday dinner at a family memebrs home. The hostess called me and asked me what dessert she could make that would be safe for my daughter who is allergic to Nuts ,Sesame and Kiwi.  I told her what mix i use, she bought it ,and made my daughter brownies. She also mentioned that she was having fruit and that she would make sure that there was no kiwi. She told me the main dishes that she was serving and they were fine for my daughter. I never thought that I would arrive at her house, her knowing all of my daughters allergies (3 1/2 hours away in another state) and find that 4 out of the 5 side dishes were covered in NUTS! Who does that...I just feel that no matter how much you say it or how many times you explain it, unless you have a child with food allergies, you just don't get it!  People think that they can have multiple dishes with nuts in it and that as long as my daughter does not eat it is is fine. They just don't get that the exposure and risk is just not worth it. She eats at a nut freee tabnle at school for a reason! I could go on and on with examples of this...thanks again for the tips...
