Burning, itchy rash, 4 months and counting

By Hall1 Friday, December 02, 2011

Nice to know I'm not alone! My rash started as a small, inconspicuous hive-like itch on my right knee cap, then it included my left one, and quickly spread as a large patch on the backs of my upper arms.  It morphed into small and medium size scabs that itch worse the more I scratch.  The burning sensation seems to proceed the little itchy scabss (affected areas are back of forearms, upper arms, upper breasts, thighs, buttocks, back and sides of knees, and ankles).  If you look at them through a magnifying glass, most of the scabs cover little "craters" in the skin. Some have a slight light yellowish border like there might be a little bit of infection.  When occasional scabs heal, they leave light "purple-ish" scars.  I have been to the dermatologist and ruled out scabies or shingles. I've taken prednisone, antibiotic for skin infection, benadryl, 2 prescription creams, and now she has  prescribed Topicort ointmint until I go in for bloodwork.  It doesn't take the itch and burn away, but within 24 hours has made it appear to be much less angry. I have put myself on a wheat and gluten free diet (out of sheer desperation) until I can have allergy prick tests.  I would drink water and eat ice the rest of my life to get rid of this miserable rash!  My rash looks like scabies or dermatitis herpetaformis photos.  Since I'm not married to a particular laundry detergent, and use whatever is on sale (mostly Tide, Gain, with a capful of Oxyclean)  I don't know which detergent it might be if it's a chemical allergic reation.  The posts about Tide and Gain detergents have my curiosity up now, so thank you for sharing that. Although I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy, its comforting to know that I'm not the only one with this insufferable condition. I have ordered a non-prescription skin cream "Terrasil" that is supposed to be a more natural remedy for dermatitis herpatiformis. I'm not advertising it because I haven't tried it, but it might be worth looking up.  I'll keep you posted as I seek and hope to get an answer and final relief.  I pray the same for all of my Fellow Itchers!
