ONSET FISH ALLERGY

By ANDREA Monday, August 20, 2007

I HAVE HAD FISH ALL MY LIFE AND NOW AT AGE 34 I AM HAVING SYMPTOMS AFTER EATING FISH. I GET A NASAL DRIP ALONG WITH MY THROAT SORE AND I FIND MYSELF HAVING TO CLEAR MY THROAT CONSTANTLY. THIS COMES ON ABOUT 5 TO 10 MINUTES AFTER EATING FISH. IT CAN LAST ANYWHERE FROM 2 HOURS TO ALL DAY. WHAT CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT THIS?

THANKS ANDREA.

Fish allergies are one of the most common allergies in adults. As a start be sure to check out the Food Allergies background information. Dr. Paula J. Busse also has an article on Food Allergies in Adults and discusses the kinds of fish that are more likely to cause reactions.

You might want to check out some of the past community discussions regarding shellfish allergies. A number of comments mention fish allergies.

I also have eaten fish all my life and sometime in the past 3 years whenever I eat fish now I get a terrible pain in my stomach. It is like labor pains, they start and rise until I am bent over double then subside for a few minutes and then start all over again usually lasting from 8 to 12 hours. It got so bad one night I had to go to the ER room. Is this a fish allergy? I do habe gall bladder problems but this only happens when I eat fish. Michelle

I have the same symptoms as above. It's not a histamine reaction. A severe cramping starts 30 min. to an hour after eating the fish and continues until I expel the fish. I ate fish for 40 years and suddenly these symptoms began. I'm not allergic to shellfish, or any other foods with fish in them. Anything like enzymes I can take?
