The sore throat may be a side effect associated with taking the Zyrtec or represent an underlying upper respiratory tract infection (as you were thinking). You mentioned not being able to take antihistamines. Have you had side effects from them previously? Did you have throat irritation after taking other antihistamines?

Antihistamines are drying agents. Sometimes the drying effect on the nose or throat may cause irritation. Sinus and throat infections commonly cause throat symptoms too. It comes down to weighing the risk vs. benefit. If the benefit in reducing drainage, sneezing, runny nose and itching outweighs the throat irritation, it may be worth continuing Zyrtec. Drinking more fluids and gargling with salt water may be helpful. If you had little improvement of nasal symptoms perhaps taking the Zyrtec or other antihistamines is not practical.
