Sulfa drug allergy timeframe?

Hello: I was diagnosed with a UTI and given sulfa drugs. I had some reactions but kept taking the drug. My doctor then put me on a medrol dosepak of steroids to fight the allergic reaction. Fine. Two weeks after finishing that, my face swelled up again. Back on another dosepak. Fine again. Again, two weeks after that, I now have sharp stomach pains and just the other night, my face swelled again. Can this still be the reaction to the sulfa drugs? Or is it possible that I am now hypersensitive and having reactions to other triggers? I am scheduled for an upper GI for the stomach pain but that's over a month away, and the only stomach relief I get is when I take Benadryl. Thanks for the help--Beth

Hi there, I have just been on sulfa drugs too for a UTI & after two days had to stop taking them due to swelling of my face (mainly my lips) actually looked like botox gone wrong! My doctor then put me on antihistamine's & thankfully my lips went down pretty much straight away. I am just left with lots of ulcers in my mouth which are very painful! All I know is in the future I will be asking if there is any sulfa in any drugs I am prescribed!

I Hope your problems are sorted soon, nothing worse than NOT feeling  100%!!!!

I too have reactions to Sulfa drugs.  Last time I was prescribed one I had a reaction, after discontinuing the medication I continued to have site specific reactions to anti-bacterial products.  Specifically I washed my hands at a resteraunt and they began to swell and develop hives.  Since I had limited access to what I felt was relable health care (I was a graduate student and insurance only covered the university health services clinc), I took benadryl and have avoided Sulfa drugs ever since.
